01Which code applies
The City of Alpharetta's residential permitting procedures list the 2024 International Plumbing Code with Georgia amendments as the plumbing code, alongside the matching mechanical and other codes. Plumbing work in the city is permitted and inspected against that code. The City's Inspection and Code Enforcement office is at 2 Park Plaza, Alpharetta, and lists 678-297-6080.
The procedures say separate permits are required for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, low voltage and fuel gas work. A plumbing permit covers the plumbing scope; other trades need their own.
02Stand-alone permits for repairs
Normally, the City says building permits must be obtained before subcontractor trade permits can be issued. The exception is when no other work is planned or associated with the trade work: then a stand-alone subcontractor permit may be issued without a building permit. The City names water heater repairs as a typical example.
That means a typical emergency repair, such as replacing a water heater or repairing a water or sewer line, can usually go straight to a plumbing permit. If the repair is part of a larger remodel or basement finish, the building permit comes first, and the City says basement finishes need separate trade permits tied to that building permit.

03Emergencies at night and on weekends
The City's procedures say that for night or weekend emergency repairs a subcontractor permit is still required, but the installer must obtain the permit on the next City business day during normal permit issue hours. A plumber can stop the damage and make the repair first, then pull the permit the next business day.
Ask your plumber to confirm they will pull the permit, and keep a copy. The City tells homeowners to require all hired contractors and subcontractors to provide a City-issued permit showing the work site address before allowing them to proceed.

Free Quote Request04Who can pull the permit
Georgia law, O.C.G.A. 43-14, requires anyone contracting or performing plumbing for hire to be licensed by the State Construction Industry Licensing Board, and the City says it will not issue trade permits to unlicensed persons. The exception is a homeowner performing their own work on their own home, who may obtain their own permit. The plumbing permit application asks for the installer's Georgia card number, class and expiration date.
Our license guide explains the Class I and Class II master plumber classes. Homeowners association approval does not replace a permit; the City says HOA approval does not authorise construction and City permits are still required.
05Posted fees
The table below quotes line items from the City's posted residential plumbing permit application, which lists a minimum permit fee of $50.00. The application in the City's forms packet carries an older revision date, so confirm current fees with the City before relying on them. Permit fees are separate from any plumber's price, and we do not publish plumber prices because there is no primary source for them.

06Roswell and Milton
Roswell and Milton issue their own permits. Roswell's building FAQ says water heaters require permits and inspections under the plumbing and gas codes and that tradesmen must be state licensed; see Roswell. For Milton, ask the City of Milton's Community Development department; see Milton.
